After leaving industry in 2020, William established himself as a consulting engineer and continues to advise industry and assist them in resolving technical questions through his business, Taggart Engineering.

In February 2022, William formed Cavern Energy Storage to develop the concept of underground pumped storage hydroelectric using salt domes. The technology combines the proven technologies of pumped storage hydroelectric and salt dome caverns to provide a reliable and economical way to develop long-duration energy storage for the Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi Gulf Coast.
